GIRARDVILLE, Pa. — McAdoo Fire Co. Inc., in conjunction with the Hazleton Fire Department and the Rangers Hose Co., of Girardville, were awarded a regional grant to buy self-contained breathing apparatus.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program recently notified firefighters of the $834,300 grant/cost share award.
The purpose of the AFG program is to protect the health and safety of the public and firefighting personnel against fire and fire-related hazards. After careful consideration, FEMA determined the recipients were consistent with the grant program's purpose and worthy of award.
The funding will replace the complete inventory of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with new state of the art protection equipment. The vital lifesaving pieces of equipment are an integral part of the personnel protective equipment used by firefighters daily.
The AFG program allows the departments to ensure firefighter safety and survival is the number one priority by providing firefighters with the most current equipment, according to the awarded fire companies.
Firefighters said they host fundraisers, such as raffles, to pay for costs not covered by the grant.
"We thank everyone for the support," firefighters said in a news release.
