Calif. FD receives $80K grant for extrication tools

Funding through the California Office of Traffic Safety will equip and train Kern County firefighters

KERN COUNTY, Calif. — The Kern County Fire Department has received $84,089 to buy "jaws of life," the extrication equipment used to rescue crash victims who are trapped in vehicles.

The funds come from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"This grant will have a significant impact on our ability to protect and serve our community, allowing us to respond even more effectively in times of crisis," KCFD Fire Chief Aaron Duncan said in a news release. "The funding will pay for modern rescue tools and provide training to firefighters that is critical for the care of those injured in crashes."

The department noted it's critical to care for crash victims within the "golden hour." Reducing the time it takes to treat patients and get them to a hospital boosts their chance of survival.
